A short woodland walk, views across Näsnaren and somewhere to pause with a picnic: Tornstugan is an outing northwest of Katrineholm for anyone who wants to get outdoors without planning a long hike.
The walk from the parking area to Tornstugan is about 600 metres. You can make birdwatching the focus of your visit or simply enjoy the lake as a break along the way. You do not need to know the names of the birds to appreciate time by the water.
Find the parking area and walk through Tornskogen
Start at the parking area by the avenue leading to Katrineholms gård. From there, the footpath goes through Tornskogen to Tornstugan. The municipality’s Naturkartan listing describes the path as wide and even, with a distance of approximately 600 metres.
Returning along the same path makes this a walk of roughly 1.2 kilometres in total, calculated from the municipality’s one-way distance. Allow extra time for the view, birdwatching or a picnic.
Open the Tornstugan listing in Naturkartan before setting out. It includes a map and a “Hitta hit” directions option. Use the parking area as the starting point for your walk; the source links below take you to the map.
Bring binoculars, or simply enjoy watching
Tornstugan stands by Näsnaren, a lake known for birdwatching. Bring binoculars if you want a closer look at activity further out on the water.
On a first visit, you could simply choose a spot with a view and stay for a while. Look for movement on the water and along the shore. With children, take turns spotting and describing what you see, without turning the outing into a test of bird knowledge.
If you would like help identifying birds, look out for the local associations’ open-house events. At these events, the organiser offers identification help and may lend visitors binoculars. Check the individual event details before visiting.
A barbecue spot overlooking the lake
There is a barbecue spot next to Tornstugan, overlooking Näsnaren. Katrineholm Municipality maintains it. Naturkartan also lists a wood store and a rubbish bin.
Pack a simple picnic even if you plan to barbecue. That way, you can still enjoy your break without lighting a fire. Check current fire bans and any instructions on site if cooking outdoors is part of your plan.
Bring your own drinking water. Tornstugan has no water supply, electricity or sewer connection, although the municipality lists an accessible outdoor toilet.
Pushchairs and accessibility
Naturkartan marks the site as suitable for pushchairs and wheelchair users. There is a raised wooden deck next to Tornstugan that the municipality describes as accessible for viewing the lake.
The deck and the observation tower are separate parts of the site. The municipality describes an external staircase to the tower balcony, so do not assume the upper viewpoint has the same accessibility as the deck.
Does the building need to be open?
The municipality does not list regular daily opening hours for the building. Association members open it, and open-house events take place a few times a year.
According to the municipality, at other times you can use the external staircase to reach a balcony overlooking the lake. Plan your visit without relying on access inside the building. Groups can book the premises through the municipal venue-booking service.
A longer walk on Vandringsled Norr
The short path from the parking area is different from Vandringsled Norr. This trail runs between Gersnäs allé and the parking area where the path towards Tornstugan begins.
Naturkartan’s description gives the trail length as 1,470 metres. It has compacted stone or gravel sections and wide boardwalks, with terrain described as flat. The walk to Tornstugan itself is additional if you continue there.
For a short outing, the walk from the parking area is enough. If you want to combine the routes, use the Vandringsled Norr map to choose your start and return route. You will find it in the source links below.
