Djulö wetland – getting here, parking and walks
Three entrances, parking at Stora Djulö and nature to explore on foot. Plan your visit to Katrineholm’s new wetland.
· Details checked 3 October 2026
Djulö wetland is a place to visit in Katrineholm for a walk, birdwatching or some time outdoors with the children. The site at Djulö gärde opened on 5 September 2026. Paths, boardwalks and viewpoints let you explore a wetland that also helps clean the town’s rainwater before it reaches Lake Djulösjön.
Bring binoculars if you have them, along with something to drink. On a first visit, we suggest allowing time to stop and look rather than trying to cover the whole area quickly.
Getting here: choose one of three entrances
There is one entrance from Djulö allé and two from Laxmans väg. If you arrive by car, general parking is available at Stora Djulö, rather than at the wetland itself.
The nearest bus stop is Furuliden on Eriksbergsvägen. From there, the closest entrance is the one at Djulö allé. Buses do not go all the way to the entrances.
There is no direct footpath from Furuliden to the wetland. The temporary road leads to a construction site and must not be used. Do not cross the cultivated fields either.
Wheelchair access and drop-offs
The municipality says visitors can get around the site using a wheelchair or walking frame. Benches provide places to rest. Special transport services and vehicles dropping off people who have difficulty walking can use the entrances.
There are two spaces for disabled parking permit holders at the Djulö allé entrance. Drive there from Djulö via Hilding Hjelmbergs väg. Do not drive into Djulö allé from Eriksbergsvägen.
Exploring with children
The municipality highlights the three ponds, viewpoints and Ek-o-lek play area as places to explore.
With younger children, try giving the walk a small mission: listen for three different sounds, look for movement in the water or compare what you can see from two spots. You do not need to know the names of the birds or plants to enjoy discovering them together.
Take a moment to watch the birds
The municipality’s description of the completed site includes a birdwatching tower and a gathering place with a weather shelter and tiered seating. The area also links to the Sörmlandsleden trail and the Katrineholmsetappen route.
If you are new to birdwatching, start simply: choose a spot, stand still for a while and listen. Binoculars help you follow activity at a distance. Try describing a bird’s size, colours and movements before looking up its name in an app or field guide.
Why the wetland was created
Djulö wetland is also part of Katrineholm’s stormwater system. It slows and cleans runoff from the town before it reaches the lake, helping reduce the risk of flooding. Your walk takes you through a landscape with a practical role in protecting the town.
Coffee after your walk
If you would like to finish with coffee at a café, check the season first. Stora Djulö Herrgård describes its manor café as operating from May to August. Other events have their own dates. Bringing a flask is a good option if you want to make sure a coffee break is part of your outing.
